Episode X - Bangalore = The fictional City of Amity

Have you ever noticed when people are faced with horrible circumstances those people tend to enter a state of denial? I remember thinking this when I saw the movie Jaws many years ago on HBO(I think sometime in the early 80's). Mayor Vaughn tries to reassure the city that there is no shark even when his police commissioner insists that the beaches need to be cleared. The only thing on the mind of the Mayor is that a lot of revenue for the city will be lost if the beaches are closed. And since he did not address the problem it may just go away....not! The problem gets worse and he destroys the reputation of the city in the end....well kinda.

Today I received an SMS, most likely an SMS blast/Spam/message, from the commisioner of police. Here it is word for word: "Msg from Police commissioner Blore City-There were no untoward incidents in blore.Info about terrorists planning to attack the cityis a rumor.Pls dont panic."

This pretty much looks like the city of Amity to me. If there is an attack after the police have claimed these are merely rumors, then reality will truly mirror fiction. I hope that the police are right. I also hope that if they are on the other hand certain that there will be an act of terror that they are actively trying to prevent it, even if they tell us something different.

We can only hope that the people charged with protecting us are smarter than the people we saw in the movies.

Case in point; In the US the current administration screwed up in a similar fashion. When Richard Clarke sent a memo to Condoleezza Rice that terrorists were determined to strikeā€¦the memo was ignored. These guys in Bangalore can learn from others mistakes.....

I feel the main intention of sending a fax to some local news agencies from whom-so-ever is to create panic. At the same time u can't ignore it as well, due to the recent IISc incident. These are the tough times for Bangalore Police to face an unknown group/individual.

I hope they learn their lessons very this time & well prepared for handling such incidents in the future.

Have a safe New years eve.

Vivek, I agree. The police need to take any threat seriously. They also nee to be prepared. My main issue is that they seem to reffer to these threats as rumors. A rumor is more like saying "i think Brittany Spears is getting a divorce." Threat is when someone makes a claim that they are going to hurt property or people. A threat should always be taken seriously and the public should be placed pn gaurd and not told that it is just a rumor. I understand the need to calm peoples nerves, but I feel it is bad to try to distract people from the real issue.
