Episode VII - Somewhere over the rainbow

It has been over a month since my last post. Bush has made an ass of himself, a lot of people have suffered and the world continues to show that it is tired. No surprise to me too. I am usually very cheerful and I am the kind of person that does not hold grudges....I actually still do not hold grudges, but I find I am not as cheerful and as upbeat as I used to be. I think that it has to do with the fact that I am getting tired of my adventure in Bangalore. I know I was ranting about people voting the clowns out of office that run this state and this city, but I realize that what I was suggesting is a bigger joke than the politicians here. I know I have also made statements regard the electricity and the roads....the general infrastructure. That too is a bigger joke than the reality. Over the past months many IT company heads have boycotted a major IT event and have pushed the government to bring about Infrastructure improvements. This too is a Joke.

Why?

Cause when IT pushed the government to take action and put the best interest of the people of Bangalore first the Government pushed back. The answer to the question of improving infrastructure was another question. The government asked the question what has IT done for Bangalore. Has the IT industry Hired Kannadigas? A Kannadiga is a localite. I will discuss this definition in a bit cause it really doesn't make any sense if you ask an equal opportunity employer to abandon that belief.

This is what on one level the people here are dealing with. This is a government that really is more about making excuses and playing politics than helping better the lives of its citizens. That is not a big surprise. Politics in India is always about deflecting and posturing (and money). Heck everywhere in the world for that matter. The reason it looks pathetic in this case is that IT has put Bangalore on the map. IT has brought in the money and has benefited the lives of many Bangaloreans and people in Karnataka. Now the IT industry is asking the government to do something real about the infrastructure issue. The government has the money, they have the need of the citizens and they have the opportunity to be great leaders. Instead they are choosing to fight someone that can leave.

China.

I see this as a "golden" opportunity for China. If they provide the proper infrastructure to their citizens and properly treat them as well (this is not likely to happen), India could loose big time. Actually India will. I read an article a couple of months ago in the The Economist where they described China as a 6 lane super highway that you could travel on at a high speed, but there is probably a bump in the road somewhere in the distance. This is probably cause China is a communist/socialist country. The Economist described India in that same article as potholed bumpy road where you could not move at any reasonable speed but way in the distance you could see a very smooth road. And then they said but you can't tell if that smooth road is an illusion. Well I think that the Karnataka Government has answered that for us. It is a mirage of epic proportions. A boondoggle of a kind no one has seen to date unless you consider Yudhisthira and his gambling problem mixed in with the motive from him to play on that fateful day…..

I must not digress there are pressing issues I must address - the fate of the free peoples of Bangalore and the ban on music and alchohol and potholes and garbage and feces in the water supply…..I have now said too much….

I do sympathize with the politicians here though. I know some of them and that they are very nice people. People – Fellow Human Beings. I mean no disrespect at this level…

But isn’t the future of the people in Bangalore/Karnataka more important to the politicians than anything else? Is not the future of all the people in America and the rest of the world equally as important. This is why I am having a difficult time understanding why they show that they really don’t care. Maybe the CM of Karnataka is kind of like the wizard of OZ.

Yeah that’s it. He is just helping everyone realize that they have their own pair of ruby slippers and all they have to do is click there heels and chant “there’s no place like home.” Poof – they will be magically transported out of crazy OZ and back to Kansas?

Well it doesn’t fit perfectly, but I sure I know why young profession people here don’t care to vote….they all have realized that the have ruby slippers.

Bangalore is truly somewhere over the rainbow. Enchanting at first, but you want to leave shortly thereafter…..
